My brother Tom wrote this; my sister Mary read it at the Funeral Service on Thursday March 31, 2016:
I want to thank you all for coming out in support of our family, and most importantly our mother, Kathleen Matusik. As we gather here today to remember "Kay", we need to focus on what she meant to each one of us. We knew her as a friend, neighbor, Grand-mom, great-Grand-mom, Mother-in-Law, Sister-in-Law, Aunt, God Mother and most importantly to some of us, Mom.
Although each of us who knew her will have our own unique experiences, it is in that bond that this woman excelled in life. She wasn't rich, nor owned a large house of envy, nor took extravagant trips for adventure, nor even drove a car, as all of us most likely take for granted. Her riches were in her family, whether by blood, marriage or family friend. Each one of us knew my mother for the special person she was.
As life seemed to challenge my mother, her Irish heritage would be steadfast and ever-present, to help keep her head up, drawing from her strength within, while working through...to a resolution. Some would see this as stubborn; we saw it as self-reliance and determination. You see my mother was "old school"; that meant to rely on yourself and family, work for what you achieve in life, never accept any handouts. At times there was suffering, although that typically passed in silence or went unnoticed.
These were the most valuable lessons for us as we moved through life, growing, marrying and creating families of our own. It was something she instilled in her children and often used to counsel her grand children. She knew what it meant to cherish the important things in life. That importance was not rooted in material items, rather the Grand Family the she was the Matriarch of, for so many years.
This is a time we need to remember her in our personal thoughts and memories. Living eighty-eight years there are sure to be many memories to recall. As a family, we have been doing just that for many days. Her life stories just keep flowing, and that is the true worth of my mother. It is how she touched each and everyone of us.
Although there are many tears that have flowed, this is the time of celebration of her life as it was. It cannot be changed or altered in any fashion, a truly unique woman who deeply touched all who knew her.
As I said my mother drew strength from her Irish ancestry. So if I may, when you hear an Irish tune, enjoy a beautiful St. Patrick's day or are just spreading some blarney, think of my mother and smile as she would do for each one of us.
I leave you with an Irish saying:
Remembered Joy
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free!
I follow the plan God laid for me. I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all...
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way. And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss...
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life's been full, I've savored much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief— Don't shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow
Quite nice, don't you think?

Mom, you were an amazing person. You were the breadwinner, provider, home maker, mother, teacher, chief cook and bottle washer. You did everything for us with little reward. Mom we appreciated everything you did, for all your children. You did not play favorites, you loved us all equally and we all loved you. I hope you are at peace now and enjoying your place in heaven with your family by you side. Mom thank you for everything you did for me and for all your children. I love you always. Love John
