A grandchild posted a condolence
Sunday, September 20, 2015
This is a version of a speech given at Don's funeral, printed here at the request of family and friends who could not be in attendance.
I hadn't grown up knowing a grandfather, so when Don and Dora (my grandmother) married when I was seven, I received a bit of an education.
Here is what I learned about my pop-pop:
He had served in the Navy.
He played football in college.
Before he retired, he had earned an honest living and supported a family of five.
He lived in a nice, big house not far from [the church] that came with a bonus aunt upstairs who was great at telling stories and baking cakes and making people laugh.
He opened his house to strangers.
He was a caring husband to my grandmom.
He was handy.
My pop-pop washed the dishes and whistled, sang, or hummed as he worked.
He really enjoyed his grandchildren.
He played board games with us. He read us stories.
He sat us on his lap and talked to us.
He set up croquet for us, and let us help him around the yard and in the garden.
When it was time for us to leave, he would always give us a hug and a kiss and say, "I love you."
He was a man of faith, and active in his church.
He could always be counted on to have a bag of hard candy on him for the kids.
When he sang, he sang well and heartily, which I appreciated, since it made it less likely that people would hear me.
I will always remember his voice, and I will always be grateful to have had him in my life.
May he rest in peace.

so sorry to see but so glad to know Mr. Boorse is with his Lord in God's presence. We have great memories of his encouraging spirit. He was a person we respected because of his walk with the Lord and that is the way he'll be tempered.

Mom,
I know this is a difficult time for you, and the last few years have been especially sad and trying. Alzheimer's will do that to a family. Your grace and love was and is an inspiration to all who know and love you. I love you, Mom.
Now, about the man who made you so happy for so many years...
Once Dad died, you said you'd never remarry. Then Don came to visit you one day. Long talks evolved into your first date with Don to see The Lion King. You were smitten. I still remember the day you called me to ask me if I thought it would be "weird" if you and Don married. I smiled to myself and told you it would be LESS weird than you marrying a "stranger" since the Boorses lived just up the street from us growing up and his kids were our playmates!
He was a good, good man, always smiling and positive. I'm glad you married him because he brought you such joy. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and will be missed by all.
Love,
Nancy

Dora,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I'm hoping your memories of Don will comfort you and eventually make you smile. Randy and I were recalling the time you came to visit and we were able to introduce Uncle Don to avocados and no-mayo coleslaw. He was so amazed to find that he liked both of these foods. It was a fun visit and one that we remember fondly. Randy enjoyed his time with Don then and again when we came to visit a few years ago. We both really enjoyed listening to Uncle Don talk about his days playing football. I hadn't known he played football in college. Please take care of yourself.
Love,
Cindi and Randy
