Francis B. "Pudge" Hughes passed away suddenly August 19, 2015.
Pudge was born on April 29, 1946 in West Philadelphia to Bernard F. and Marian C. (nee Marley) Hughes. He was a graduate of John Bartram High School, Class of 1964. During the summers of 1963 and 1964 Pudge worked at the NY World's Fair, where his father managed a pavilion for SKF Ball Bearings Inc.
In 1966 at the height of the Vietnam War, Pudge enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing basic training he was assigned to the new aircraft carrier, USS John F. Kennedy (CVA-67). As part of the inaugural crew he was given the distinction of "Plank Owner". He was honorably discharged in 1970.
He pursued a successful career in food service and management, starting with bartending in Atlantic City with the dawn of the Casinos. As a bartender, people were his passion, but Pudge enjoyed cooking, dancing and the street corner sounds of 50's Doo Wop. His last career was in security at the Philadelphia Intl Airport.
Pudge was a member of the VFW and American Legion Murray Stuart Post 566 in Glenolden.
Survived by his beloved wife Penny Smith, son Frank (Siobhan) Hughes Jr.; step children Allison (Daniel) Quigley, Alexander (Jeanette) Smith; brother Joseph (Germaine) Hughes, sister Bernadette (Albert) Gibboni, brother Jack (Maria) Hughes; grandchildren Daniel Francis and Riley; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and cousins.
