What can we say about Emil,
First, he was a lover of life. On more than one occasion we used to say Emil had more lives than any two cats! He always seemed to rally at the last minute.
Marty and I were one of three couples; Joan and Emil, Marie and Pete and Marty and me. We were more than friends, we were family! We loved each other. We traveled together to so many beautiful places and we made so many memories. We laughed together, cried together, grew old together.
Life will be different without Emil and Pete. They are sorely missed. Our hope for you is that you are with Pete having margaritas and laughing.
Love you Em! See you on the other side.

Joan- sorry for your loss. “Em” was a great husband, entertainer. Even though it was only a few times, I enjoyed the recitals.

Dearest Miss Joan:
My deepest love and condolences. Emil was such a wonderful man; and the two of you such a sweet and fun couple. He ALWAYS had a nice word and ALWAYS had a bright smile. His personality and soul were authentic and genuine. I'll miss him.

I remember when I first me Emil 45+ years ago at your brothers home he immediately impressed me with his quick wit and humor. Edith and I were privalaged to be at your wedding and watched your relationship blossom as the years past. Our bi yearly family get togethers we’re always full of laughter and joy due mainly to Emil’s wit and humor I mentioned earlier. Emil will always hold a place in our hearts. You will truly be missed.

What a great friend to my parents, Peter and Marie Eglin. They shared so many interesting and exciting stories about all the trips the group of friends took over the years. My parents loved being with Joan and Emil even if it was a small gathering or meeting for dinner somewhere. Thank you Joan and Emil for being part of my parents lives!
With deepest sympathy, Chrissy and Chuck Zwaan

Dear Joan,
Each time I sent a greeting card it was always addressed "to a good and wonderful couple" and for a very good reason. That in itself is an accurate description of you. Having your friendships for more than half of my life has made ME feel good and wonderful too. I truly value the many, many laughs we've shared together. Those good and wonderful memories are like precious gifts and they'll live on in my heart forever. Rest in peace EMIL and I'll see you in the next life.
With Lots of Love,
Dayle Coffin

For most of my adult years, Emil has been a part of my family’s life from the moment we first met him 40+ years ago and knew that this soft spoken, thoughtful gentleman would be a keeper in Joan’s life. Every holiday from Thanksgiving and Christmas to Easter as well as sad occasions such as the loss of Joe (my father), Doris (my mother) and Mary (my aunt) were gifted by Emil’s presence, empathy, and support. He came to New York to be present for my first official service as Director of Music at St. Bartholomew’s Church in 1995, humorously quipping that the choir wore their official blue and white uniforms to ensure that the propaganda was reaching the attendees. He wasn’t far from the truth.
I loved the annual summer get togethers with Emil and Joan, at Edith’s and Joe’s house in the Poconos and the constant back and forth teasing between Joe and Emil with Joe doing a very convincing imitation of Emil’s distinctive head voice and Emil pretending to ignore him. One of our favorite places to lunch was at Flagstaff Mountain Resort, overlooking the Lehigh River Valley Gorge, where Emil once remarked: “Wow, that’s a beautiful bathroom!”- a comment which remained a standing joke for years and guaranteed many return visits there. Also unforgettable was watching Emil, already in his 80’s, dance during Happy Hour at Boulder View Tavern. He was completely uninhibited and animated by the energy of the music and the encouragement of his friends.
Yes, there were humorous and bright moments with him, but it was his wisdom and quiet intelligence that set him apart. Whenever he offered an opinion, there was no question that it was well thought out and informed. It was always offered with his special brand of reserve and gentleness.
I know I’m not alone in saying that Emil uplifted so many friends with his kindness, integrity and humor. It was what made him authentic. I shall miss him tremendously. May he rest in peace.

Emil possessed a kind, gentle nature. His keen wit was always at the fore front and his funny observations followed by a slight smile and twinkle in his eye would light up the room. Rest in Peace Dear Emil.
